Among diseases most common in the Republic of Belarus and other countries, musculoskeletal disorders stand out prominently. Unfortunately, osteoarthritis is the most frequent today, which can lead to disability. To prevent this, modern medicine has developed several alternative methods to combat this disease, among which joint replacement (hip, knee, hand joints) is the most effective.
Osteoarthritis, as it is….
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative-inflammatory process that directly changes the joint. Osteoarthritis can affect almost any joint. The causes of osteoarthritis are diverse. The disease can be triggered by injuries, heavy physical exertion, and even poor environmental conditions. However, among the wide range of this disease, three types are most common:
- hip osteoarthritis or coxarthrosis,
- knee osteoarthritis or gonarthrosis
- hand joint osteoarthritis.

In this disease, the cartilage tissue of the affected joint primarily changes, leading to further joint alterations. Cartilage tissue has some regenerative capacity, but overall, the process of joint degeneration is irreversible.
On methods of treating and preventing osteoarthritis
Regarding osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, and hand joints, various treatment and prevention methods can be employed. The affected joint should be maximally rested, chondroprotectors, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and analgesics should be taken, therapeutic exercises should be performed, physiotherapeutic procedures should be undertaken, etc. However, to avoid false hopes for a complete cure, it should be noted that all treatment and prevention methods only slow down the disease progression.
Surgical intervention. Hip, knee, and hand joint replacement.

For any disease, sincere belief in recovery is key to successful treatment. Osteoarthritis patients should not lose hope for recovery and a return to normal life, especially since a radical treatment method does exist. It involves surgical intervention aimed at replacing the affected joint with an artificial one (endoprosthesis). Such surgery permanently solves the patient's joint problems, as the artificial joint (endoprosthesis) is highly resistant to wear and damaging effects. Considering these three directions of osteoarthritis, specialists at the 6th City Clinical Hospital have developed a separate program for targeted treatment of coxarthrosis, gonarthrosis, and hand joint osteoarthritis – hip, knee, and hand joint replacement.
